The artist, Helen (Chaiah) Schwab, was born in New York, attained
honors in art & art history in UC Berkeley, CA, made aliyah to Israel
in order to learn Hebrew and met her husband, Rabbi Zev Schwab, the
day she arrived. A six month work and study program became twenty
years! She raised eight children while continuing her Jewish and fine
art/graphic art studies, and incorporates into her work the varied
influences of medieval Jewish manuscripts, Matisse, and the yearning
of the Psalms of David.
Pressed to draw on her resourcefulness when her beloved husband was
killed in a tragic icy highway crash, she learned computer graphics
and used her art skills to help support her family.
Chaiah envisions an art of vibrant color, powerful line and sumptuous texture.
Recent work features found objects, from beads to bottle caps, buttons
and seeds, which impart humor and whimsy to the art. Her wall
sculpture is jig-sawed from masonite board, layered, textured with
polymer emulsions and painted with acrylics. Calligraphy paintings use
ink with gouache or acrylic. Computer graphics are done in Illustrator
and PhotoShop.
The wide variety of media all aim at a common theme: the glorious
beauty that our Creator has granted us for our enjoyment.
"Enjoying color is good for our health, positively healing!" she says
from experience.
"I surrounded myself with favorite colors to aid recovery from surgery
and loss."
Now she uses color for joyous and peaceful feelings.
